What is hearing impairment?
Hearing impairment means an impairment in hearing, whether permanent or fluctuating, that adversely affects a student’s educational performance, but is not included in the following definition for deafness.

What is deafness?
Deafness means a hearing impairment that is so severe that the student is impaired in processing linguistic information through hearing, with or without amplification, that adversely affects a student’s educational performance.

Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education – Criteria for Eligibility in the Educational Category of Hearing Impairment/Deafness

A student displays a hearing impairment/deafness when:
  1. A hearing impairment has been diagnosed by an audiologist, and
  2. The hearing impairment adversely affects the student’s educational performance.

The SSD Family & Community Resource Center (FCRC) offers books, videos and other resources on hearing impairment/deafness (PDF). Materials may be sent home through school mail to families whose children receive SSD services. Others may come into the FCRC to check out materials.
