DESE Offers Facilitators

for IEP Meetings

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has begun a program to provide trained facilitators for Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings at no cost to families or districts. IEP facilitation is a voluntary process that families and districts may engage in when both families and school district staff agree it would be beneficial to have a neutral person assist the IEP team to efficiently and effectively address team concerns.

IEP facilitation should not be confused with other, more formal options that families have to appeal school district decisions with which they disagree, such as mediation or a due process hearing. Requests for IEP facilitation should be made to DESE’s Office of Special Education. Delays in obtaining facilitation will not delay the IEP process or required timelines.

Visit DESE’s website for more information about the Facilitated IEP process or to access an application. For general questions about how the process may be implemented at SSD, contact SSD Parent Education and Diversity Awareness Program administrator Michelle Levi Perez by phone at (314) 989-8438 or by email at mleviperez@ssdmo.org.
